Help for Nook on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and the web

Need a hand? Nook is made by one person, Prerak, and he reads every message.

Getting started

How do I start using Nook on iPhone, iPad or Android?

Open Nook and choose Sign in to Nook, then Create account. Enter your email address and a password; Nook accounts are for people 18 and over. Nook emails you a link to verify your address. Open it, or choose Have a verification token? in the app and paste the token from that email. Then connect your mail accounts in Settings → Accounts & identities. If they are already in Nook for Mac, you can bring them over from the Mac instead; see below.

Why do the phone apps need a Nook account when the Mac app doesn't?

On iPhone, iPad, Android and the web, Nook's server does the work of keeping your mail up to date: it syncs your accounts while the app is closed, sends scheduled mail on time and tells you when new mail arrives. To do that it keeps your mail passwords and sign-ins encrypted, and a copy of your mail. Nook for Mac does all of this on the Mac itself, so it needs no account. From Nook 0.3.0 you can still sign in to one on your Mac, to see the same mail accounts on your other devices. The privacy policy explains exactly what the server keeps.

How do I see my Mac's mail accounts on my phone?

You need a Nook account first. Nook for Mac can sign in to one but not create one, so create it in Nook on your iPhone, iPad or Android, or at nook-app.prerakgada.in, and verify your email address. Then, in Nook for Mac 0.3.0 or later, open Settings → Accounts & identities and sign in with the same email and password. Nook asks which of the Mac's mail accounts to add. After a few minutes they appear on your iPhone, iPad, Android and the web. From then on Nook's server keeps their mail in sync too, so your phone tells you about new mail even while the Mac is off. Your Mac keeps getting its mail directly from your providers, as before.

  • Outlook and Microsoft 365 accounts stay on the Mac for now.
  • A Gmail account you connected on your phone with Google sign-in needs one more sign-in with Google on the Mac before the Mac can show it. Accounts that use an app password, such as Zoho or iCloud, come over by themselves.
  • Signing out on the Mac stops the syncing. It doesn't remove anything from the Mac or from your Nook account.
Can I use Nook in a browser?

Yes. Sign in with the same Nook account at nook-app.prerakgada.in and the mail accounts you connected on your phone are already there.

Why is my Mac's Nook different from my phone's?

Unless you sign in to your Nook account on the Mac, Nook for Mac keeps everything on your Mac and does not use your Nook account. Both show the same mailboxes from your providers, but the mail accounts you connect and Nook's own extras are kept separately on each device. Once the Mac is signed in, the mail accounts you add, your signatures, templates and smart folders, and many mail preferences are the same everywhere. Layout, appearance, notifications, rules, reminders and Set Aside are still set on each device.

I forgot my Nook password.

Choose Forgot password? on the sign-in screen. Nook emails you a link to set a new one; you can also paste the token from that email into the app.

Connecting your mail

Gmail

On iPhone, iPad, Android and the web, choose Google in Settings → Accounts & identities and sign in with your Google account. This opens Google's sign-in in your browser; when it says the account is connected, switch back to Nook and your Gmail appears within a few seconds. In Nook for Mac, choose Gmail.

If you prefer an app password instead: turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google account, create an app password in your Google Account under Security, then choose Other IMAP in Nook with imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, your Gmail address as the user name and the app password as the password.

Zoho Mail
  • In Zoho Mail, turn on IMAP access (Settings → Mail Accounts → IMAP).
  • If your Zoho account uses two-factor authentication, create an app password in Zoho Accounts → Security → App Passwords and use it in Nook instead of your normal password.
  • Choose Zoho in Nook and check the server names. Personal accounts use imap.zoho.com and smtp.zoho.com. Accounts on your own domain use imappro.zoho.com and smtppro.zoho.com. If your Zoho account lives in another region, use that region's ending instead of .com — for example imappro.zoho.in and smtppro.zoho.in in India. Zoho Mail lists the right names under Settings → Mail Accounts.
iCloud Mail

Apple requires an app-specific password for mail apps other than its own. Sign in at account.apple.com, open Sign-In and Security → App-Specific Passwords, and create one for Nook. Then choose iCloud in Nook and enter your iCloud email address and that password. Nook fills in imap.mail.me.com and smtp.mail.me.com for you.

Any other IMAP mailbox

Choose Other IMAP and enter the incoming (IMAP) and outgoing (SMTP) server names, ports, user name and password your provider gives you. On iPhone, iPad, Android and the web, Nook's server makes the connection, so it can only reach mail servers on the public internet, not one on your home or office network.

Outlook and Microsoft 365

Nook for Mac connects Outlook, Hotmail and Microsoft 365 accounts: choose Outlook and sign in with Microsoft. On iPhone, iPad, Android and the web, Microsoft accounts can't be connected yet. The Microsoft button there shows an error saying sign-in isn't set up on Nook's server. For the same reason, an Outlook account on your Mac stays on the Mac even when the Mac is signed in to your Nook account.

What is an app password, and is it safe?

When your account uses two-step sign-in, providers such as Google, Apple and Zoho give mail apps a separate password instead of your main one. It only works for mail, and you can revoke it at any time in your provider's security settings without changing your main password. Nook for Mac keeps it in your Mac's Keychain. Nook's server keeps it encrypted for every account in your Nook account: those you connect on a phone or the web, and those you add from a Mac signed in to your Nook account.

Notifications

How do new-mail notifications work?

On iPhone, iPad and Android, Nook's server checks your accounts for new mail about every minute, even while the app is closed, and sends a notification for each new message in your inboxes. They usually arrive within a minute or two of the mail reaching your inbox.

I'm not getting notifications.
  • Check that notifications are allowed for Nook: on iPhone and iPad in Settings → Notifications → Nook, on Android in Settings → Apps → Nook → Notifications.
  • Check that you are signed in to Nook on that device; signing out stops its notifications.
  • Open Nook and check that the account shows no connection problem in Settings → Accounts & identities. A changed or revoked app password stops syncing until you reconnect the account.
  • Focus modes and Do Not Disturb can hold notifications back.
Can I hide the subject or sender on my lock screen?

Yes. In Settings → Notifications choose to show the sender only, or nothing but “New mail”. Your phone's own preview setting (Show Previews on iPhone) also applies.

Your account and your data

How do I delete my Nook account?

In Nook, open Settings → Accounts & identities → Delete Nook account… and enter your password. You can also do it in Nook on the web, or ask by email. Everything about deleting your account.

Does deleting the app delete my account?

No. Deleting the app, or signing out, leaves your Nook account and its mail on Nook's server. Delete the account itself to remove them.

What happens to my mail if I disconnect an account?

Nook stops syncing it and deletes its saved password or sign-in straight away. On iPhone, iPad, Android and the web, mail already copied from it stays in your Nook account until you remove the account from all devices or delete the Nook account. Your mail at your provider is never affected.

What is the difference between Remove from this Mac and Remove from all devices?

On a Mac signed in to your Nook account, Remove from this Mac takes a mail account off that Mac only. It stays in your Nook account and on your other devices. Remove from all devices, which phones and the web offer too, takes it out of your Nook account: Nook's server deletes its saved password or sign-in and its copy of that account's mail, and every device signed in to your Nook account removes it. Neither one deletes mail at Gmail, Zoho or any other provider.

Does Nook show ads or track me?

No. Nook has no ads and no analytics or tracking code, and your mail is never sold or used to train AI models. Read the privacy policy for the details.
